Altar Servers are members of the assembly who have made their first
communion and normally receive the eucharist whenever they participate in
the liturgy. Altar Servers should receive proper formation before they
begin serving. The formation includes instruction on the Mass and its
parts and their meaning, the various objects used in the liturgy (their
names and use), and the various functions of the server during the Mass and
other liturgical celebrations. Servers receive appropriate guidance on
maintaining proper decorum and attire when serving Mass and other
functions. Servers assist the priest and deacon during the Eucharist and
other liturgical ceremonies so that the liturgy can be conducted with grace
and reverence. Servers carry the cross, the processional candles, and hold
the book for the priest or celebrant when he is not at the altar.
Servers should be willing to commit to serving at least 1 - 2 Sunday each
month and during special liturgical celebrations and can contact the
Priest, Deacon, Acolyte or Altar Server Coordinator to become an Altar
Server.
